The early 1990s was a prolific period for Bob Finlayson as he had retired from signwriting and was able to paint (more or less) fulltime. There were many still lifes. The subjects were chosen from what happened to be in the house at the time, and most groupings, like this one, were arranged on the kitchen table. While still lifes were often completed quite quickly, people gathering for meals, drinks and conversations would have to be careful not to disturb the composition.
