People are sometimes surprised to see chokos, regarded in Australia as a lowly and unappetising vegetable from a nuisance vine, as a subject for painting. Bob used them a number of times:
Drawing for Escarpment (mist)

Escarpment (mist) is a view of the Illawarra escarpment (cliffs/mountain range just south of Sydney and extending down the coast, running roughly parallel to the sea for a long way and enclosing the region known as The Illawarra) with dwellings in the foreground. Bob loved this area and in his 30s lived at Stanwell Park (1970-1) and Coalcliff (1971-4). For more information about his works linked to the escarpment, see Escarpment, Coalcliff.

Previous Featured Works

Chokos in the mist has the mist from another of Robert Finlayson's paintings, Escarpment (mist), coming out and swirling around the two chokos on the kitchen table. The tops of the chokos are misted in such a way that they seem to have joined the landscape. The blending of realities amuses and engages viewers, and this beatiful little painting is a great favourite. Bob gave the chokos names at one time!
